The culinary culture of the Ainu people, who have lived in harmony with Hokkaido’s majestic nature, embodies a spirit of gratitude for nature’s bounty. At Ainu Homestyle Cooking Ponchise, located in downtown Obihiro, you can enjoy Ainu home-style dishes made by the owner, who has Ainu ancestry and grew up with these flavors. They also serve creative dishes using ingredients from Tokachi and other parts of Hokkaido, along with alcoholic beverages inspired by Ainu culture. The walls inside the shop feature the traditional Ainu string instrument tonkori from Sakhalin, and occasionally you can hear its gentle tones. Events showcasing the charm of Ainu culture and music are also held from time to time.
